It did not take long for Defiance to start connecting offensively. The Yellow Jackets tallied three runs in the second, ultimately the only three needed.
Troy Konwinski (Allen Park, Mich. / Allen Park) singled to start the inning, and following some savvy base-running, found himself on third. With two on base, Michael Gilliland (Napoleon) singled, driving in Konwinski for the first run of the game. After Gilliland jumped to steal second, drawing the throw from the Calvin catcher, Jude Neary (Toledo / Cardinal Stritch Catholic) took off from third to steal the second run. The next at-bat saw Derek Angelone (Gibsonburg) double to left field, bringing in Gilliland for the final run.
From their, the DC pitchers took over. Will Bohlman (Centerville) went five innings for Coach Woodley's side. With the help of a rock solid defense the Knights were held scoreless during the sophomores outing, allowing him to claim his first win of the season.
Kendal Duval (Blissfield, Mich. / Blissfield) took over for Bohlman in the sixth. The freshman put on a good showing for the Yellow Jackets, striking out five Calvin hitters. Duval allowed three hits and just one run in the appearance.
Offensively on the day, Konwinski, Neary, Gilliland, Angelone, and Lucas Thomeier (Wickliffe) each recorded one hit for the Purple and Gold. Gilliland and Angelone tallied one RBI each in their efforts.
Defiance will return to action Saturday, April 13, as they move back into HCAC play with a visit to Earlham College. Game one of the doubleheader is slated for 1:00 pm.
