Baseball Tops Ohio Northern in Prime Time

Nies improved to 3-0 overall on the year with 14 strikeouts.
The Yellow Jackets (8-3-1 overall) drew first blood in the bottom of the second inning as senior Tanner Stippich (Lima/Allen East) reached first on a hit by pitch before junior Jude Neary (Toledo/Cardinal Stritch Catholic) placed a sacrifice bunt that positioned runners on second and third. With runners in scoring position, sophomore Lucas Thomeier (Wickliffe) delivered as he doubled to left center scoring Neary for the early 1-0 lead.
Defiance continued to have success at the plate as they added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning as senior Troy Konwinski (Allen Park, Mich.) reached first following an ONU miscue. He would later advance to third off a Stippich sacrifice bunt and score when Neary again provided clutch at the plate on a deep fly ball to center field, 2-0.
The Purple and Gold tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as senior Garrett Sierra (Defiance) drew a two out walk. He would score on the next at bat as junior Ben Bucklew (Archbold) doubled down the left field line, scoring Sierra. DC plated the games final run later in the inning as Konwinski capitalized on a Ohio Northern miscue that scored Bucklew, 4-0.
As a team, DC tallied four runs on four hits with three RBI.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday, March 23 as they travel to Wisconsin to take on Carthage.
