DC Baseball Shut Out by Rose-Hulman

DEFIANCE, OHIO  --  The Defiance College baseball team was shut out by Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology, 10-7 in seven innings, in the final game of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series at Craig A. Rutter Field.

Rose-Hulman (22-8, 14-4 HCAC) got on the board early with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.  The Fightin' Engineers went on to score two more runs in the third and three more in the fourth to increase the margin to 7-0.

The final runs of the game came in the seventh inning when Rose-Hulman crossed home plate three times to pad the lead to 10-0 and put the "mercy rule" into effect.  In the bottom half of the inning, Defiance recorded two quick outs.  Following a hit batter, the Yellow Jackets then recorded the game-ending out, resulting in a 10-0 victory for the Engineers.

Defiance ended the game with three hits with senior Gary Levengood (Beverly Hills, Fla./Lecanto), sophomore Dom Gentile (Defiance) and freshman Michael Glliland (Napoleon) all recording base knocks and all going one-of-three overall.  

On the mound, junior Nick Watkins (Lima/Central Catholic) was one of four pitchers used in the game and started the game, going three innings while allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits.  He was also given the loss and drops to 5-2 overall for the season.

DC will next travel to North Manchester, Ind. for the final meeting of a HCAC series against Manchester (Ind.) University on Tuesday, Apr. 26.  The game is scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m.
