ADA, Ohio – Tim Pitro set one and tied two more all-time records for the Defiance College baseball program and Bryn Lehman etched his name in the record books as well, as the Yellow Jackets blew out Ohio Northern, 12-1, on Wednesday for an impressive non-conference road triumph.
Pitro, who already holds DC's career hits record and is just five runs shy of another top mark, continued his assault on the archives with a 4-5 showing at the plate, one run, two RBI, a pair of doubles and six assists from his second base position. Pitro's performance gave him sole possession of DC's career assists record with 327, passing Jim Beaverson's (1987-1990) previous mark of 321. The Gahanna, Ohio, native also moved into a tie with Hans Zipfel (1993-1996) for the program's all-time lead with 31 doubles and 98 runs batted in.
Another Yellow Jacket got into the act as well, with Lehman adding six assists of his own from the shortstop position to bump his season total to 102 in his first campaign with Defiance. Lehman's 102 assists move him past the previous record of 97 set by fellow shortstop Jeremy Hawkins during the 2006 season.
The duo of Pitro and Lehman were not alone on Wednesday however, as Defiance dominated the action from the start and pounded out 12 runs on 15 hits, to go along with seven stolen bases as a team.
Alex Timofeev bolstered the offensive onslaught with three hits, a trio of runs batted in and one run scored, while Kirk Jesse collected two hits, two RBI, one double and one stolen base and Keith Wade added two hits, two runs and two steals to join Pitro in rounding out DC's multi-hit performances. When the dust had settled, eight Yellow Jackets had at least one hit, while eight had touched home plate and six had stolen at least one bag.
The 12 runs would prove to be plenty for the DC pitching staff, as Jake Taylor (2-4) cruised through seven innings of work against the Polar Bears (23-10). The freshman hurler scattered four hits and allowed just one run, and struck out the side in the fourth inning on his way to a four strikeout effort.
Aaron Patterson and Pat McKee finished the job by each tossing one scoreless inning in relief. The untainted showings kept Patterson's earned-run average at an unblemished 0.00 in five games this season, while McKee lowered his ERA to 3.38 over eight appearances.
DC (13-19, 4-11 HCAC) will look to carry the solid play into a weekend series at Mount St. Joseph (15-18, 5-10 HCAC). The Jackets and Lions will open the set on Friday at 5:00 pm, before playing a doubleheader on Saturday at noon. All three games will be played at Xavier University's Hayden Field.
