Defiance Splits Pair of High-Scoring Games at Hanover

HANOVER, Ind. – Defiance College put 23 runs on the board in two games of Saturday's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Hanover. The Jackets won the opener, 15-2, before coming up short, 12-8, to the Panthers in the nightcap.

DC's bats jumped all over the Hanover pitching in the first game, batting around in each of the first two innings and sending 21 men to the plate. The offensive carousel resulted in five runs in the first and six more in the second for an 11-0 lead. The Jackets did not stop there however, tacking on two more in the third and eventually piling up 15 runs on 20 hits in the 15-2 onslaught.

The offensive eruption was paced by Casey Kahsen, who scored three times, wrapped out three doubles and ended 4-5 at the plate. Zach Stallkamp also continued his blistering early-season stretch by going 4-5 with three runs and four RBI, while Keith Wade and Brent Kremer each drove in three runs.

Matt Kaighin (2-0) allowed just one run in his four innings to earn the victory on the mound, while Andy Habecker, Patrick McKee and Aaron Patterson each tossed one inning in relief to close out the victory.

Hanover turned the tables in the second game of the day, as the Panther bats exploded for nine runs in the second inning. DC could never get any closer than four runs the rest of the way and eventually suffered the 12-8 defeat.

Kirk Jesse knocked in two runs from his leadoff spot, while Kahsen added three more hits and Alex Timofeev went 3-4 with a pair of runs scored.

Defiance (7-8, 1-2 HCAC) will face another road HCAC challenge when it takes on Bluffton (7-10, 0-3 HCAC) on Tuesday at 4:00 pm.
