PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Defiance College continued its winning ways early in the 2010 season, as freshman Jacob Taylor tossed a complete game gem on the mound and the bats pounded out nine runs to secure the Jackets' fourth-straight victory with a 9-2 triumph over Kenyon on Wednesday morning.
Kirk Jesse wasted no time getting the offense on track by singling on the game's first pitch and later scoring on a Tim Pitro double to give Defiance the 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
Taylor (1-0) gave the lead up by allowing two runs in the bottom half of the inning, before settling in and shutting out Kenyon over the final eight frames. The Saint Mary's, Ohio, native kept the KC hitters off balance and only allowed four runners to reach base the rest of the way, while not allowing anyone past second base.
Taylor eventually finished off the complete-game performance, by allowing just the two scores on five hits and three walks. Taylor also retired three hitters on strikes, en route to notching his first collegiate victory.
The lineup came right back in the top of the second with another run to knot the score at 2-2, as Matthew Chidester and Braden Brugler singled to open the threat and Jesse added his second safety in as many at bats to push Chidester around.
The Jackets kept pouring it on, as Brent Kremer and Keith Wade scored in the third to take a 4-2 advantage for Defiance. Jesse and Brugler then came around to score in the fourth to push the spread to 6-2 and DC cruised from there, tacking on three more runs to secure the 9-2 victory.
Jesse led the 17-hit onslaught by going 5-5 from his leadoff slot and scoring three times, while driving in a pair of runs. Pitro (2-4), Wade (2-5), Bradley Rittner (2-5), Chidester (2-4) and Brugler (2-5) all joined Jesse with multiple hit performances to power the offense.
Defiance (4-1) will face a pair of games on Thursday, as it is slated to play Wilmington (0-5) at 9:00 am, before squaring off with Medaille (4-2) at 1:00 pm.
