TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Defiance offense had no answer for the HCAC's top-rated pitching staff and suffered 11-1 and 12-1 losses on Saturday at Rose-Hulman. DC mustered only two runs and 10 hits on the day.
The Jackets got on the board first in the opener behind a pair of scoreless innings from Ethan Salsbury and a run in the top of the third inning. Alex Timofeev got things started with a single and advanced to second on a single by Mike Dushane. A fielder's choice kept runners on first and second with two outs and a R-H fielding error allowed Dushane to score the first run of the game.
DC's 1-0 lead would not hold up for long, as the Engineers busted loose for five runs in the bottom half of the frame to take control and used a dominating performance on the mound from Derek Eitel to finish off the 11-1 victory.
The second game of the day was all Rose-Hulman with the home squad plating four runs in the first inning and gradually building a 12-0 lead before DC strung together three-straight pinch-hit singles from Nick Welling, Brent Kremer and Grant Barbour in the top of the ninth to break up the shutout.
Defiance (7-30, 3-18 HCAC) will wrap up its 2009 campaign on Sunday with a single game at Rose-Hulman (27-11, 15-6 HCAC) at 12:00 pm.
