DEFIANCE, Ohio – On this date, April 23, in recent Defiance College athletics history, a men’s golfer claimed a tournament championship and the softball team swept home Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheaders in back-to-back seasons. Also, the men’s tennis and baseball squads recorded two wins apiece in Defiance.

Also, the men's tennis and baseball squads recorded two wins apiece in Defiance.
During the second day of competition when hosting the Defiance Spring Invitational in 2017, the Yellow Jackets' Alex Miday fired a final-round, 1-under-par 69 to earn medalist honors in a 73-player field at Eagle Rock Golf Club. Miday, who finished with a 36-hole total of 141, was the only golfer in the event to shoot a round at or under par. Jacob Tinsley added a 147 for third place as DC ended third of 13 teams at 607 after a 295 in the last round.
Also three years ago in softball, Defiance hammered Franklin College by the scores of 11-4 and 8-2 at Sal Hench Field. In game one, Jackie Hartman went 2 for 3 with a home run, walk, three runs batted in and three runs scored for the Yellow Jackets while Michaela Bauer finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Haley Patty and current DC head softball coach Megan Warren each had two hits and scored twice while Jordan Osborne added a two-run single. Sarah Kaya pitched the full seven innings for the victory. Osborne was 4 for 4 with a run scored in the second contest while Kaity Kuhn came up with three hits in four at-bats. Brooke Gostomsky drove in three runs after going 2 for 4 with a double and run scored while Hartman and Patty each tallied a hit and pair of RBIs. Pitcher Jamie Kimbler went the distance to record the win.
In 2016, the Defiance softball team edged Mount St. Joseph University, 4-0 and 3-1, as Warren knocked in all seven runs. In the shutout victory, Warren produced a three-run homer and sacrifice fly while Kaya tossed another complete game, allowing just three hits with seven strikeouts. Warren went 3 for 3 in the second contest while Emily Denhard chipped in with a hit and two runs scored. The winning pitcher was Jamie Kimbler, who gave up only two singles over seven innings and retired the final seven batters she faced.
The Yellow Jackets shut out Adrian College, 9-0, in men's tennis 11 seasons ago. Austin Kleman, Trevor Ault, Lachmond Bratton, Tyler Ault and Adam Fausey were all victorious in both singles and doubles. Trevor Ault failed to lose a game, winning 6-0, 6-0 in singles and 8-0 in doubles.
At the E. Stevens Dix Tennis Facility in 2013, the DC men's tennis squad won an HCAC match versus Anderson University, 7-2. For Defiance, Cord Speelman and Justin Walker were singles and doubles winners.
Last year, the Yellow Jackets got a 13-7 baseball victory over Capital University after building a 12-2 lead after six innings. Troy Konwinski led the DC offense, going 3 for 5 with a home run, double, three RBIs and three runs scored while Michael Gilliland also collected three hits in five at-bats, driving in two runs and scoring two others. Nate Kaffenbarger homered and doubled in a 2-for-5 showing with four RBIs and two runs scored while Jon Brown was the starter and got credit for the win as Defiance used five pitchers.
In 2016 versus conference foe Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, the Yellow Jackets split a baseball doubleheader, coming out on top, 5-2, in the finale. Dom Gentile ripped a pair of hits, walked and scored a run in DC's victory while Nick Peters threw all nine innings to earn the win.
